Our Culture
Teamwork
Ryan tax consultants work in teams consisting of a Team Leader, Manager, Senior
Manager, or Director who leads two to four Senior Tax Consultants and three to five Staff Tax Consultants.
Managers delegate engagements to their staff based on workload, experience, and
other criteria. Most engagements consist of one or two staff members working together with
the Manager to achieve the desired results. At any time, team members can ask
questions and learn from their teammates' experience.
Teams don't exist just to complete projects. Working on a Ryan team offers
tremendous opportunity for learning in a positive environment, sharing interests and ideas with
others, and developing strong ties to coworkers. Our teams really function like families.
Travel
Because Ryan represents clients throughout the United States and Canada, our employees
are expected to travel. Our clients may have operations in well-known destinations like
Atlanta, New York City, or Toronto, and in smaller communities throughout North America. It is impossible
for us to predict who will travel where, but we can estimate that our tax consultants
spend 30 to 35% of their time in the field at client sites.
Position Summaries
Ryan's career path is similar to other consulting firms. Our career
path moves up through the following positions:
Staff Tax Consultant. This position is the entry-level position into Ryan.
Staff Tax Consultants typically are recent undergraduates and graduates from leading
accounting and finance programs. Skills learned at this level provide the foundation
for advanced state, local, federal, and international tax expertise.
Senior Tax Consultant. This position requires one to two years of
tax experience. This experience can come from the staff position at Ryan,
similar positions with other consulting firms, or from various government audit
offices. Ryan Senior Tax Consultants have mastered basic taxation concepts and are
developing strong supervisory skills.
Team Leader. Team Leader is the first step in managing your own team. Team
Leaders have strong tax skills and are able to start building a
team of tax consultants and managing client projects. As a Team Leader, an individual
will typically lead two to four team members and begin to develop stronger management,
supervisory, and negotiation skills.
Manager. Managers at Ryan direct teams of four to seven people.
Managers must have exceptional interpersonal skills, demonstrated expertise, and an
intense commitment to Ryan. Additionally, Managers have developed professional
negotiating and presentation skills that they use in meetings with representatives of
taxing authorities.
Senior Manager and Director. Senior Managers and Directors also direct teams, ranging from 4 to 12
people. Senior Managers and Directors are responsible for marketing services to prospective
clients and generally lead projects for our largest clients. Many Senior
Managers and Directors speak publicly at international, national, regional, and local tax conferences.
Principal. Every successful Senior Manager and Director has the opportunity to become a
Principal at Ryan. A Principal is responsible and accountable for each
of our client engagements. Directors, Senior Managers, and Managers report to a Principal for
each of their engagements. Principals develop the strategic vision of our Firm and
are responsible for tactically executing our vision.
